Making a final in these competitions is quite an achievement, as the competitions are usually very large. In the archive section is a listing of the MITBDT finalists in competitions that the MIT Ballroom Dance team has participated. In most instances, there are at least 20 competitors in a single event, with as many as 200 (Beginner International Rumba, MIT 2007)!

MITBDT syllabus competitors danced their hearts out in what will probably be the last competition of the spring semester. Kudos to our rookies who competed in Bolero, Mambo, and Paso Doble for the first time!
Our rookies captured a few callbacks in the Silver-level events as well. Congratulations to Carine You & Christina Yin for making the finals of Silver International Chacha/Rumba and semifinals in Silver Samba/Jive from an octafinal! A shout out to Eve Fischer & Audrey Marchante for getting a callback in Silver American Viennese Waltz and Silver Samba/Jive, and to Hailey Sweeney & Beatrice Chen for callbacks in all Silver Latin events.

MITBDT had stellar results at this competition and several couples placed into higher divisions. Congratulations to Jad Elmourad & Jessica Bernier for winning the Gold Latin 4-dance event, which placed Jessica out of Gold into Open Latin! Congratulations to Constantin Weisser & Miray Omurtak who danced Silver Latin and placed into Gold by winning the Samba/Jive 2-dance event and taking home 4th in the Chacha/Rumba 2-dance event. Congratulations also to Maddie Leone & Julia Bowers for great results in Silver Rhythm, placing first in the Swing/Mambo 2-dance event and second in the Chacha/Rumba 2-dance event, which propelled them to Gold Rhythm. Finally, congratulations to Michael Moebius & Elizabeth Rideout for sweeping the Silver Standard events and placing into Gold Standard.
MITBDT rookies had a great performance as well in their debut at the Bronze level. Despite the fact that most dancers were out of town for IAP and had less than a week of preparation before this competition, every competitor made the final of at least one event.

Columbia University Campus, Alfred Lerner Hall; New York City, NY
Congratulations to our yearling couple Alicia Xie & Alexandra Martinez Lopez for sweeping Bronze Rhythm. Alicia also had a strong performance with Julia Bowers in Bronze Smooth and Standard. They took home 1st place in the Standard Waltz/Quickstep 2-dance event and the American Viennese Waltz, 2nd in the American Foxtrot, and 3rd in the Smooth Waltz/Tango 2-dance event.
Kudos to our rookies who made finals in all Newcomer events, with four couples in the Newcomer Swing final! A shout-out to Jesse Kirkpatrick & Anna Soong who placed 2nd in Pre-Champ Paso Doble using a routine rather similar to what our rookies will be learning this IAP. As our coach Armin reminds us daily, it shows that a focus on movement quality and not flashy figures pays off in the end!

Special congratulations to Henry Tran & Cindy Jie for representing MITBDT in the finals of all Newcomer Latin events and for earning a total of 3 first place and 5 second place ribbons throughout the competition.
MITBDT had seventeen dancers attend the 2019 DC Dancesport Inferno competition, hosted by Ballroom at Maryland at University of Maryland, College Park. The competition lasted the weekend of November 9-10, 2019.

We were represented by Ryan Bisbey & Electra Carzis in the Rumba, Aniket Gad & Lin Quek in the Samba, Boris Yelin & Amanda Hutter in the Foxtrot, and Corey Cleveland & Clio Flikkema in the Quickstep (pictured below; couples left to right). Eleven MITBDT dancers competed in Open level events, facing tough competition. Special congratulations to Aniket & Electra, runners up in the Championship Rhythm event. Ryan & Electra represented MITBDT in Champ Latin. Charlie Hirst & Laura Aravena made it to the semifinals of Champ Smooth from a quarterfinal, and Boris & Amanda competed in both Champ and Pre-Champ Smooth events. Boris switched partners and danced with Lin in Pre-Champ Standard alongside Corey & Clio. Jonathan Tidor & Katie Mathison debuted in the Pre-Champ International Viennese Waltz event. MITBDT had four dancers attend the 2019 UConn Husky Challenge this past Saturday, October 19th. The event took place at the Coventry High School in Coventry, Connecticut.
The day began with Smooth and Standard in the morning. Ryan Salazar and Joanna Lin competed together at the Bronze level. They placed 6th in the American Foxtrot and made finals in all three Standard events, taking home 4th in Waltz and Tango and a stellar 2nd in Quickstep. Jerry Bai and Maddie Leone represented MIT at the Silver level. In Smooth, they finaled in all three events, claiming 5th in the Waltz/Tango 2-dance and Foxtrot, and 3rd in the Viennese Waltz. In Standard, Jerry and Maddie earned 7th in the Waltz/Tango 2-dance, 6th in Foxtrot, and 8th in the syllabus Viennese Waltz against Gold-level couples.
The day continued with Rhythm and Latin in the afternoon. In the Bronze Rhythm, Ryan and Joanna had a strong performance, earning 2nd in Chacha and Rumba and winning 1st place in Swing! For Latin, Ryan switched partners and competed in Silver with Maddie. They placed 4th in the Chacha/Rumba 2-dance and 3rd in Samba and Jive. Jerry danced with Joanna in Latin as well, and they made semifinals in all Silver events.
As if the day was not exhausing enough, when Ryan, Maddie, and Jerry returned to Boston, they continued to dance the night away at MITBDT’s October Dance of the Dead social.
Well done, competitors!
On the collegiate scene, there has been an increasing problem of individuals competing at lower levels than they are permitted to do so as set by the guidelines of those individual competitions. This gives them an unfair advantage. The MITBDT takes level restrictions seriously and does not tolerate violations of this sort. We do what we can to prevent this from happening within our team. If there are any concerns that an MITBDT team member may be "dancing down" in an upcoming competition, please contact the MITBDT team captain. In fairness to all competitors, we would urge that any individual suspected of level violations from other institutions also be reported prior to the competition, to either the individual's affiliated school/studio or the competition organizers.
If you notice errors in the results, please contact the MITBDT team captain to update the listing.
