Awards

In Newcomer through Pre-Championship, awards will be presented to the finalists in each of the events. In addition, overall awards will be presented to the overall top three couples in Newcomer, and to the overall top three couples in each style of Beginner through Pre-Championship.

Although it is clearly to one's advantage to place as high in each dance as possible, one need not enter all dances in a style to be eligible for the overall awards.

In Championship, only the overall awards will be presented to the finalists in each style. Winners of Championship styles will have the honor of their name appearing in a special Past Winners section on our web site and in the competition program in subsequent years.

FAQ

There will be no team match competition at the MIT Open this year. Instead, we will be calculating overall team standings throughout the event, using a system borrowed from track and field competition. For each event, team points will be awarded as follows:

1st place 10 points
2nd place 8 points
3rd place 6 points
4th place 4 points
5th place 2 points
6th place 1 point

Each member of the couple will earn points for their own team. (For example, in a competition where a Harvard/Harvard couple places first and a BU/Tufts couple places second, Harvard will receive 20 points, and BU and Tufts will each receive 8 points).

Standings will be updated after each awards ceremony and posted throughout the event. First, second, and third place awards will be presented at the end of the competition.

So how will the school awards be decided?

We will be awarding points to the top six couples in every event (see Rules page for details). Each member of the couple earns points for their own school (i.e., intercollegiate couples split their points between their respective schools). Overall standings will be updated continuously throughout the event as awards are announced. Only student members will earn points towards the team match awards for school-based teams.

How can I help make this system work?

Please be sure that your registration accurately reflects your team membership (especially intercollegiate couples). In addition, if you make changes between online registration and the event, please be sure to tell us about them. If you make the finals and the MC announces the wrong school for you during awards, be sure to correct him or her. Your cooperation will help assure that your school gets the proper credit for your successes!
